Building Wisely
"For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus." 1 Corinthians 3:11 (KJV)
In our passage today, Paul reminds us that Christ alone is the firm foundation on which we must build our lives. As Charles Spurgeon said, "The best of men are men at the best." Even mature believers will fail and falter at times. Yet if our lives are founded on Christ, we can have confidence that He will refine and purify us, burning away the worthless "wood, hay and straw" of sin and self-will.
As the passage says, "If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire." Though we may suffer loss from unwise building, our salvation is secure in Christ. For "no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus."
Yet sometimes the pendulum swings too far the other way. In our anxiousness to affirm people, we can send the message that they "can live however they want to even as a Christian, sin as much as they want to." But Paul warns us, "If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him."
As Spurgeon said, "Though the world tells us to put self first, Jesus calls us to die to self daily and make Him our all in all." This is the only sure foundation for a life that will stand the test of time and trial. On that great day when all is revealed, only what was built upon Christ will remain.
So let us heed Paul's warning to build wisely upon the Rock, not drifting from the Cornerstone. May we let go of lesser things to cling to Christ alone. For He makes all the difference between a life destroyed and reward secured. With Jesus as our foundation, we can walk steadfastly through every storm and emerge pure gold.
