Rebuilding the Temple Before the Walls

In the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, we read about the return of the Jewish exiles to Jerusalem after 70 years of captivity in Babylon. One of the first priorities for the returned exiles was to rebuild the temple, which had been destroyed by the Babylonians. Under the leadership of Zerubbabel, the people laid the foundation and completed the Second Temple, though it was less glorious than Solomon's original temple (Ezra 3:8-13, 6:14-15).

It was not until over 60 years later, under Nehemiah's leadership, that the city walls and gates of Jerusalem were rebuilt. The walls had been broken down and burned when the Babylonians first attacked Jerusalem. Rebuilding them was a key part of restoring security, stability, and dignity to the people (Nehemiah 2:17).

The order of these re-building projects contains an important spiritual lesson for us. The temple, as the center of worship of God, took priority over the walls, which provided mainly physical security and demarcation of property. As Jesus would later teach, we must seek first the kingdom of God rather than worrying about material needs (Matthew 6:33).

In our lives today, we face many potential priorities competing for our time and resources. But as believers, we are called to put our relationship with God first. Regularly participating in corporate worship, reading Scripture, praying, and serving others should take priority over worldly pursuits. As we stay focused on spiritual priorities, God will take care of our physical needs and lead us to rebuild the other important areas of our lives as well.
