I recently read about a family that spent seven months walking the Appalachian Trail, over 2,100 miles of wilderness. At the start, they packed exactly what they thought they needed. They had a plan. They had a system.
But as the miles added up, they discovered a humbling truth: the trail dictates.
The terrain decided how they dressed, how they carried their gear, and how they spent their days. They didn't control the trail; the trail controlled them. The mountains, the rain, and the steep descents forced them to adjust, to strip away the unnecessary, and to accommodate a reality they couldn't manage.
We often approach our lives the same way. We want to pick the trail. We want to decide the direction, the pace, and the scenery. But the beauty of the Christian walk is that we aren't the ones holding the map.
"He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake." — Psalms 23:3
God doesn't just lead us along the path; He often picks the path. And sometimes, He picks the rough one, the steep climb or the rainy valley. He does this because the trail is doing a work on us while we are passing over it. It is molding our perspective, refining our philosophy, and deepening our relationship with Him.
Tonight, if you feel like you are on a trail you didn't choose, one that is costly, exhausting, or just plain hard, don't fight the terrain. Trust the Guide.
He knows why you are on this path, and He will equip you for every mile.
Let the trail do its work.

1. Identify one "hard trail" or difficult circumstance in your life right now and consciously surrender the need to control the outcome to God.
2. Ask yourself: "What is this specific trial molding in me that a smooth path could not?"
3. Spend five minutes in prayer thanking God for being your Guide, specifically praising Him for the strength He provides for the steep climbs.
