Back in 1972, Jimmy Rush and his father were eating at Wintzell's Oyster House in Mobile, Alabama, when they spotted a sign on the wall. It was a joke, a classic piece of restaurant humor. It read: "Free oysters to any man 80 years old accompanied by his father."
The staff told them the offer was technically genuine, but in the history of the place, no one had ever actually claimed it. It seemed impossible. But Jimmy and his dad decided right then to make it a lifelong goal.
Fifty-four years later, in February 2026, Jimmy walked back into that restaurant on his 80th birthday. And right beside him was his 99-year-old father. They didn't just find a sign; they found a promise that had outlasted decades, owners, and the skepticism of everyone who had seen that sign and walked away.
"For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by Jesus Christ." — 2 Corinthians 1:20
Most of us treat God’s promises like that sign on the wall. We see them in the Bible, we think they’re beautiful, but we assume they aren't actually for us or that the wait is just too long to be realistic.
But the nature of a promise isn't found in how quickly it's delivered; it's found in the character of the one who made it.
Tonight, consider these three things:
1. Stop treating the Word as a suggestion. The promise is genuine. It isn't a "maybe" or a "perhaps." It is a settled fact based on God's character.
2. Accept the timeline. Some promises are delivered in a moment, and others are lifelong journeys. The delay is not a denial.
3. Stay in the game. The only way to miss the promise is to stop walking toward it.
The Promise-Keeper is still in business.
Hold on. Keep walking. Your "Amen" is coming.
