A Life Lesson from Norman Kissinger.
Redeeming The Time Brothers (RTTBROS)
All Problems Are Spiritual Problems
After years of pastoral, substance abuse, and professional counseling, I believe that all counseling is spiritual counseling. Even if an atheist comes to talk about an issue going on in his or her life, sooner or later the discussion comes around to questions like “why is this happening to me?” “Why am I going through this?” “What is the reason for this?” All these questions are spiritual in nature.
Even the atheist is asking these questions. The right answer to the atheist is that if there is no God then there is no meaning. Everything is random chance and if you and I suffer we just hit the bad luck of the random chance draw.
But that's not my point. My point is that everyone is asking these questions. And if it is true that all counseling is spiritual counseling then it is also true that all problems are spiritual problems. It doesn't really matter if my problem is my marriage or finances or feelings or behaviors I can't control, sooner or later I still ask the question of, “why me?”
Now I've stepped into the spiritual realm. And I cannot remember a time when any person I ever talked to didn't go there. We all want to know why. And because we are forced into confronting the deeper meaning of our problems, we have stepped into the realm of the eternal where God reigns supreme.
And I now see that as I'm working through the issues of my life, I should be starting at the end rather than at the beginning. By this I mean I should start with God and end with the problem rather than starting with the problem and ending with God. That would really save a lot of time. I'm going to end up there anyway and the greatest lessons are the life lessons we learn when God shows us who He is and reminds us of who we are. Then we see meaning in everything through Him.
