Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by the way a lighthouse works. In the middle of a storm, when the waves are crashing and the wind is howling, the sailor isn't looking for a conversation; he is looking for a signal. He needs to know that there is a fixed point of light that hasn't moved, a light that refuses to be extinguished by the weather. He needs to know he is seen.
When we hit the dark seasons of life, it often feels like the storm has finally put out the light. C.S. Lewis once wrote about the crushing weight of grief, describing that feeling where you go to God in desperate need, only to feel like you've found a door slammed in your face and a sound of bolting on the inside. It is a terrifying silence. We start to wonder if God has looked away or if He is disgusted by the mess we are in.
One pastor noted that the most important light in his home isn't the grand chandelier in the dining room, but the little nightlight that keeps him from stubbing his toe in the dark. Sometimes we look for a blinding flash of light to end our suffering, but God's providence often comes as a quiet nightlight, ensuring we don't stumble while He leads us through the valley.
The Word tells us that this light never fails. Psalm 22, verse 24 says, For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
God does not recoil from your pain. He doesn't turn His head in disgust when you are broken. He is not hiding from you in your hour of need. He is the light that stays on, and He is listening for your voice. If you feel invisible tonight, remember that the Creator of the universe is leaning in. Just cry out to Him. He hears you.
Rest in the truth that you are seen and you are heard.
