The Year of Open Doors

A new year stretches out before us like a blank canvas, full of possibility and hope. The calendar change gives us a chance to reset our gaze from the past to the future, as we stand on the precipice of new horizons. What wonders await us just around the bend?

As the new year dawns, let us come before the Lord in prayer. May we lay down our own agendas and ask Him to guide and direct our steps in this next chapter. God sees the full picture while we grasp only fragments. He knows the adventures He has prepared for those who follow Him.

In Charles Spurgeon's words, "That God who makes the daybreak to follow the darkness will make your tomorrow to rejoice in the light of His presence." Trust in His perfect plan. Watch expectantly for open doors. He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion.

Dear Lord, as we step into a new year, we acknowledge you as Lord over all our days. Show us Your plans and purposes! We want to walk in step with You. Thank you for going before us. Give us wisdom and strength for the journey ahead. You make all things beautiful in their time. We can't wait to see what You have in store!

 The Bitterness Ends Here

"For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." - Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV)

As the old year breathes its last, many of us look back on broken relationships and hearts heavy with unforgiveness. Names and faces we had hoped to forget resurface once again, dredging up pain we thought was far behind us.

But Christ has called us to a higher way. Just as He extended lavish grace to us when we least deserved it, so too are we to release those who have wronged us from any obligation. Forgiveness is a choice - a sacrifice of pride on the altar of peace.

Won't you join me in letting go of bitterness as we step into the new year? As Corrie ten Boom said, "Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart." I don't know about you, but I'm tired of lugging this resentment around. My shoulders ache from the weight of it. How about you, friend? Isn't it time to shake free from the shackles of the past?

The ball rests in our court. By opening our hands in surrender, we can release the hurts and abuses that have kept us hostage for far too long. Jesus paved the way by forgiving us while we were still sinners. Let us extend the same grace, that our hearts may be light and free as we embark on a fresh start.

The bitterness ends here. Let us walk into the dawning of a new year with hearts unbound by hatred. The first step is ours to take.

 "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Ecc 3:1

As the end of another year approaches, it is wise to take time to reflect and "close the books" on the past 12 months. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Just as a business closes out its financial records at year's end, we too should close out the year spiritually and emotionally.

We must close the book on past regrets, failures and sins, seeking God's forgiveness and asking Him to "blot out my transgressions" (Psalm 51:1, 9). We should also close out this year with gratitude, echoing the psalmist's refrain to "forget not all his benefits" (Psalm 103:2). A thankful heart lifts our eyes from the difficulties of the past year to the eternal truths of God's faithfulness and sufficiency.

As we tally our spiritual account, we can confidently affirm with Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7). Any shortcomings are covered by God's grace.

The new year lies ahead like unwritten pages in a book. Let us follow Isaiah's example and say "Behold, I will do a new thing" (Isaiah 43:19). As we close the books on this past year, may we open our hearts to all God has planned for 2024, trusting in His perfect timing and purposes.

The Century Lesson

"12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Psalm 90:12

Imagine sitting down with someone who has lived over 100 years. What wisdom and perspective they must have! A survey asked centenarians what they would do differently if they could live life over again. Their top three answers provide a lesson for us all:

Relate more. Make relationships a priority. The centenarians said their most meaningful memories were of time spent with family and friends. Don't let busyness crowd out connecting with loved ones.

Risk more. The older adults regretted risks not taken more than mistakes made. Don't let fear hold you back from trying new things and pursuing dreams. Step out in faith.

Reflect more. Wise elders emphasized the importance of self-examination and learning from experiences. Make time for contemplation and growth. An unexamined life is not worth living.

No matter our age, we can apply this century lesson. Value relationships. Take courageous risks. Reflect and learn. May these guide us to live each day wisely and without regret.

Appomattox Appointment 

Psalm 46:10 (KJV) says "Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."

The Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the American Civil War. (There would end up being two battles fought at Bull Run most references are to the first one.) A man named Wilmer Mcean lived close to Manassas where the Battle was fought, in fact shortly after the battle he bought part of the battlefield from the Carter family.  Later he decided he wanted to settle somewhere more peaceful so he moved a hundred miles South to Appomattox County.

Several years after moving there, in April of 1865, a Confederate messenger completely unaware of McLean’s prior ‘involvement’ in the war, knocked on the door of McLean’s new home and asked if Robert E. Lee might use the house on the following day to meet with Ulysses Grant and sign a formal surrender. McLean reluctantly agreed. Some time later, Wilmer McLean is supposed to have said, ‘The war began in my front yard, and ended in my front parlor.’"

Like Wilmer Mclean, who tried to escape the Civil War by moving away from the first battle, we often try to run away from God and the areas of our life where we struggle to surrender control to Him. We put up a fight, resisting His will and trying to do things our own way. But just as the war followed Mclean to his new home, God patiently pursues us in our running. He desires that we stop fighting and know the peace and rest that come with surrender.

No matter how far we run, we cannot escape the Lord who wants to free us from the heavy burdens of our sin and self-rule. Like Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant in Mclean's parlor, we must surrender our prideful hearts to our loving Father. When we stop struggling and let God take His rightful place on the throne of our lives, we will find the comfort and freedom we have been searching for all along. He is waiting with open arms to welcome us home.

The battle rages on only if we continue waging war in those areas God wants to rule. But when we wave the white flag and submit to the King of Kings, the struggle ceases. We can be still in His presence and know the peace and purpose that come with full surrender.

"I love this portrayal of the Nativity. Before the shepherds come rushing in jabbering about an angel choir, before ANYONE shows up with gifts, there’s just Mary, exhausted from child birth, and Joseph, overwhelmed by the task in front of him, and the baby, the baby that changes everything. The quiet beauty of THIS moment stirs my heart every time I look at it. 

I love the pomp and fanfare of Christmas (and the chaos of family gatherings). I really do! But I cherish the quiet moments to stop and gaze at the baby. I too am exhausted and overwhelmed, and He still changes everything."

As we draw nearer to Christmas, let us pause to reflect on the wonder of Jesus' birth. This verse from Isaiah prophesies the coming of Christ centuries before his arrival. Jesus came as a helpless babe, yet he is the almighty God in the flesh. He came to establish his reign of perfect peace and justice. At Christmas we celebrate how Jesus came to redeem us and restore our relationship with God. Just as the Israelites awaited their prophesied Messiah, we too must prepare our hearts to receive Christ anew this Christmas season.

As Charles Spurgeon said, "Out of the ivory palaces, into a world of woe, came the Lord Jesus, to be born of a peasant woman, in the smallest village of Judah; he lived to minister, to suffer, to die." Christ left behind his glorious home in heaven out of love for us. Though he is the mighty King, he was willing to be born to humble means and suffer greatly so that we could be reconciled to God.

 As we reflect on the timeless message of "peace on Earth, good will to men," let us consider practical ways to cultivate peace and goodwill in our lives, in line with the spirit of the season.

1. Cultivating Inner Peace:

*Start your day with Biblical meditation to center yourself in God's will and cultivate peace.

*Practice gratitude by keeping a journal and reflecting on the things you are thankful for each day.

*Engage in activities that bring you joy and peace, such as, worshiping God or spending time in nature, listening to hymns or praise music, or reading inspirational literature.

2. Extending Good Will to Others:

*Actively listen to others and seek to understand their perspectives, even if they differ from your own.

*Practice random acts of kindness, whether it's offering a helping hand to someone in need, giving a compliment, or simply smiling at a stranger.

*Forgive those who may have wronged you, and seek reconciliation where possible.

“The key to forgiving others is to stop focusing on what they did to you and start focusing on what God did for you”. Max Lucado

In today's fast-paced and often unforgiving world, it can be challenging to let go of the hurt and pain caused by others. However, Max Lucado's quote reminds us that forgiveness is not about excusing the wrongs done to us, but rather shifting our focus from the hurt to the overwhelming grace and forgiveness we have received from God.

Consider Joseph from the Old Testament. His brothers sold him into slavery out of jealousy, yet he chose to forgive them. Instead of harboring bitterness, Joseph chose to focus on what God had done for him. He recognized that God had a plan for his life, even in the midst of betrayal and hardship. Ultimately, Joseph's forgiveness and faithfulness to God's plan allowed him to save his family from famine and reconcile with his brothers.

In our own lives, we can follow Joseph's example by shifting our focus from the wrongs done to us to the incredible love and forgiveness that God has shown us through Christ. When we remember the depth of God's forgiveness, it becomes easier to extend that same forgiveness to others. As we meditate on God's grace and mercy, let us strive to be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving towards one another, just as God, for Christ's sake, has forgiven us.

In the book of Isaiah, we are reminded that when we face challenging situations, God promises to be with us. Just as He made a way through the Red Sea for the Israelites, He continues to guide and protect His children through their trials. While God may not always remove our problems, He assures us that He will make a way through them and walk with us.

Throughout history, we find numerous examples of individuals who faced adversity and emerged stronger, contributing to the betterment of the world. One such example is Helen Keller, who overcame the dual challenges of being deaf and blind to become an influential author and activist. Her perseverance and resilience not only transformed her own life but also inspired countless others to overcome their own obstacles.

Similarly, the story of Abraham Lincoln, who faced numerous personal and political setbacks throughout his life, serves as a testament to the triumph of resilience and determination. Despite enduring the loss of loved ones, multiple business failures, and electoral defeats, Lincoln persevered and ultimately became one of the most revered leaders in American history. His unwavering commitment to the abolition of slavery and the preservation of the Union during a tumultuous period in U.S. history exemplifies the transformative power of perseverance. Lincoln's resilience and steadfast leadership not only shaped the course of a nation but also continue to inspire individuals around the world to confront their own challenges with courage and fortitude.

These examples remind us that while trials may not be removed from our paths, they can serve as opportunities for growth and positive change. As we navigate our own challenges, let us take comfort in knowing that God is with us, guiding us through the waters and fires of life, and ultimately leading us to a brighter future.

May we find strength in the assurance that God's presence will make a way through our difficulties, shaping us into vessels of hope and agents of transformation in the world.

Philippians 3:14 (KJV) "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

In this powerful verse, the apostle Paul expresses his determination to press on toward the goal of knowing Christ and the power of His resurrection. This verse encapsulates the idea of perseverance and the unwavering pursuit of a deeper relationship with Christ.

As we reflect on this verse, it's important to consider the impact of our attachment styles on our relationship with Christ. The anxious attachment style often leads individuals to seek reassurance and validation from others, while the avoidant attachment style can result in a reluctance to fully engage in close relationships, including the relationship with Christ. Both styles can hinder our ability to press on toward the mark in our journey with Christ.

In 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV), we are reminded that "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." This verse speaks directly to the anxious attachment style, encouraging us to lean on the power, love, and soundness of mind that come from our relationship with Christ. Instead of seeking validation from others, we are called to find our security in Him.

Similarly, in Psalm 46:1 (KJV), we find comfort in the words "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." For those with an avoidant attachment style, this verse serves as a reminder that God is always present and ready to provide the security and closeness that may be lacking in human relationships.

In Matthew 11:28 (KJV), Jesus Himself extends an invitation to all, saying, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." This verse speaks directly to both anxious and avoidant attachment styles, offering a place of rest and security in Christ, regardless of our relational tendencies.

As we press on toward the mark, let us remember that our ultimate prize is the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Regardless of our attachment styles, we are called to lean into Christ, finding our security, validation, and rest in Him. Let us embrace His love and allow it to transform our attachment tendencies, drawing us closer to Him and empowering us to press on in our journey of faith.

Weaned from Striving, Nourished by Grace

In a world ablaze with ambition, Psalm 131 whispers a subversive truth: contentment thrives not in chasing the extraordinary, but in savoring the simple. King David, scarred by victories and trials, offers a profound prayer, which in essence says:

My heart, Lord, seeks no crown, no mountain climb. Not in grand pursuits, but in Your embrace, I find rest.

Like a weaned child, David bids farewell to constant need, to grasping at "things too high." He finds solace, not in worldly achievements, but in childlike dependence on God. Just as a babe nestled in its mother's arms, David's soul seeks comfort in the Divine presence.

Imagine a child, eyes wide with wonder, exploring the sunbeams dancing on the floor, the smooth pebble in their palm, the rustle of leaves – a symphony of the ordinary. This is the spirit David invites us to cultivate, letting go of anxieties that cloud our vision and steal our joy.

We must "quiet ourselves," not becoming passive, but silencing the internal clamor, the need for external validation. To be present in the moment, where a morning dewdrop on a blade of grass becomes a miracle, a simple leaf, a masterpiece.

Remember Jesus' words: "Consider the lilies...they toil not, neither do they spin...Yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." (Matthew 6:28-29)

The lilies, unassuming wildflowers, are our model. They don't strive, they don't boast, they simply exist in quiet beauty, drawing life from the unseen. This is the essence of a weaned soul: finding peace in the ordinary, trusting the hand that provides.

So, let us shed the burdens of ambition, embrace the childlike wonder within. Let the everyday, the seemingly insignificant, whisper joy. For in these moments, we connect with the source of true richness, with the quiet whisper of God's love reminding us: the greatest treasures lie not in possessions or achievements, but in the simple act of surrender and the gift of a present heart.

HANDS TO KEEP US FROM SINKING. 

Matthew 14:29-31

    And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. [30] But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. [31] And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him…

He caught Simon Peter before he went down. His hands are soft, strong, and secure.

These are the same hands that fashioned wood in His dad’s shop/wrote in the sand rather than pointing a finger of condemnation at an adulterous woman/touched blind eyes and deaf ears, replaced Malchus’ ear/broke bread enough for a multitude!/in humility held His own nose, allowing John to baptize Him/wiped tears from weeping eyes, including His own at times…and will one day wipe away all tears!/ 

…formed the heavens and the earth and yet grasped Mary’s finger as an infant…!  And it’s the same hand that grasps onto little ones never given the chance to live!

…those hands which washed the disciple’s stinking feet later wiped great drops of blood from His brow in the garden, and then were fastened to the cross for you and for me!/it was the power of His hands that rolled the stone away from that tomb/unbelieving Thomas found faith when he saw those nail-scarred hands/those hands waved at the ascension…not saying goodbye, but see you later…and then pointed saying, “until then, go ye into all the world and preach the gospel” and “I go to prepare a place for you with these hands!” And the hands that will receive us home one day.

We’ve got every reason in the world to rejoice in the wonderful hands of Jesus…our names are graven on them, no man can pluck us from them!  Lord, we’re your small children, and we can’t even walk w/out you holding our hands!

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)

Brother Lawrence's "Practicing the Presence of God" is all about cultivating a constant awareness of God in our daily lives. Here are a few main points:

- Developing a posture of humility before God, recognizing that He is the source of all good things.

- Practicing gratitude in all circumstances, even when things are tough.

- Listening for God's voice throughout the day, in everything from quiet moments to ordinary tasks.

- Seeking to honor God in everything we do, seeing all of life as an act of worship.

In short, Brother Lawrence encourages us to live with a mindset of constant connection to God, seeing Him in all things and making Him the center of our lives. 

Here's a daily plan that incorporates insights from all the books we discussed:

1. Start the day with a short prayer, expressing gratitude to God for the new day and asking for His presence throughout the day.

2. Throughout the day, take short pauses to focus on taking a few deep breaths and simply be aware of God's presence with you.

3. Look for moments of joy or beauty throughout the day and give thanks to God for them.

4. Before going to bed, spend a few minutes in prayer, reflecting on the day and expressing gratitude to God for His presence.

5. Repeat this process every day, and over time, you'll begin to notice a greater awareness of God's presence in your life.

It takes practice, but the results are worth it!

 Isaiah 42:3 KJV - A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth

In the bustling world of celebrity encounters, a simple photo captured something far more profound than a fan's excitement. Jason Momoa, known for his imposing stature and Aquaman persona, met a young woman confined to a wheelchair. Rather than pose with her chair in the picture, he offered to lift her up, his gentle strength dwarfing her physical limitations. "I'm a little heavy," the young woman hesitated, to which Momoa replied with a reassuring grin, "That's okay, I'm a little strong."

This heartwarming exchange whispers a powerful truth about God's love for us. Like the young woman, we often approach Him burdened by the weight of our past. The crushing guilt of mistakes, the sting of failures, and the shackles of circumstance can make us feel like a heavy, immovable stone. We hesitate, fearing we'll be too much to handle, too broken for His grace.

But just as Momoa's strength transcended the woman's physical limitations, God's love knows no bounds. He sees not our weight, but the depths of our pain and the yearning for His embrace. His response to our hesitation mirrors Momoa's: "That's okay, I'm a lot strong."

Isaiah 42:3 promises that He will not break a bruised reed, nor quench a smoking wick. In our fragility, He sees resilience. In our flickering hope, He sees the embers of faith waiting to be rekindled. He doesn't demand perfection, but offers His arms to lift us, to carry us through the darkness, and to remind us of the strength He has placed within us.

Like the young woman in the photograph, let us open our hearts to His loving embrace. Let us surrender the weight of our burdens, trusting His strength to carry us. In His arms, we will find not just support, but a renewed sense of purpose, a hope that rises above our limitations, and a love that whispers, "Even when you feel heavy, I am a lot strong."

So today, release the chains of self-doubt and step into His embrace. Let Him lift you, heal you, and fill your heart with the knowledge that you are never alone, never too heavy, and forever loved. He is the strong hand that will guide you through every storm, and His love is the light that will illuminate your path to a brighter tomorrow.

Remember, dear friend, even when you feel like a heavy load, God's love is a lot stronger

A Victorious Spirit: Taking Control in the Midst of Storms

Proverbs 16:32 sets the stage for our journey today: "He that ruleth his spirit is better than he that taketh a city." This verse speaks to the immense power we hold within ourselves, the power to control our spirit, even in the face of adversity.

Victor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and author of "Man's Search for Meaning," embodies this principle. He faced unimaginable horrors, yet he chose to find meaning and purpose in his suffering. He recognized that even in the darkest of circumstances, he had the power to control his own thoughts and responses. He chose to focus on what he could control, instead of dwelling on what he couldn't.

This is a stark contrast to the "victim mentality," which traps us in a cycle of helplessness and resentment. When we view ourselves as victims, we give power to those who have wronged us. We allow them to control our emotions and dictate our narrative. But by choosing to take agency, we reclaim our power. We become the authors of our own stories, and we write them with courage and resilience.

Here are some ways we can cultivate a victorious spirit in our own lives:

Practice self-awareness. Pay attention to your thoughts and emotions. Become aware of how your internal dialogue affects your external reality.

Challenge negative thoughts. Don't accept every thought that comes to mind as true. Question negative narratives and replace them with faith filled thinking.

Focus on what you can control. Don't waste energy on things beyond your control. Focus on your own actions, choices, and responses.

Practice gratitude. Take time to appreciate the good things in your life, no matter how small. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have.

Seek support. Surround yourself with positive and uplifting people who will encourage you and support your journey.

Remember, even in the face of hardship, we have the power to choose our response. We can choose to be victims, or we can choose to be victors. The choice is ours. Let us choose the path of power, resilience, and a victorious spirit.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, grant us the strength and wisdom to control our own spirits. Help us to see beyond our circumstances and focus on what we can control. May we find meaning and purpose, even in the midst of adversity. May we be victors, not victims, in the battles of life. Amen.

In basketball, a full court press is an aggressive defensive strategy that applies intense pressure on the opponent across the entire court. In the spiritual realm, our adversary the devil employs a similar strategy against believers who seek to deepen their prayer life and ministry.

My brother and I have endeavored through our online ministry to equip Christians to serve God more effectively. A vital component is cultivating a robust prayer life. As I have focused intently on prayer over the past months, I have faced intensified demonic attacks, for Satan greatly fears and hates prayer. The more we devote ourselves to prayer, the more the powers of darkness will strive to hinder us.

Yet we need not cower in the face of spiritual opposition. The Lord has not left us defenseless, but has provided spiritual armor to protect us (Ephesians 6:10-18). Moreover, if we humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand (1 Peter 5:6), resisting the devil through faith, he will flee (James 4:7). Though times are dark, we must not lose heart, for greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). I have seen more prayers answered as I have sought to strengthen my prayer life. Truly God is a prayer-hearing and prayer-answering God.

So let us press on in prayer, not relenting before the enemy’s attempts to weary us. Through ceaseless prayer in the Spirit, let us stand firm against every scheme of Satan, even as we make supplication for all the saints (Ephesians 6:18). By God’s grace, we will prevail. The kingdom of darkness cannot withstand the fervent, effectual prayers of the righteous (James 5:16).

The Overflow: A Devotional on God's Abundance

2 Kings 4:2 - "And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil."

Imagine yourself in the shoes of the widow in 2 Kings 4. Debt collectors are at your door, threatening to take your sons away. You feel utterly helpless and alone. Yet, in the midst of your despair, God intervenes through the prophet Elisha. He asks you a simple question: "What do you have in the house?"

"Nothing but a pot of oil," you reply, your voice barely a whisper.

But Elisha sees something you don't. He sees a potent symbol of God's overflowing abundance. He instructs you to gather empty vessels and pour the oil into them. Miraculously, the oil multiplies, filling every vessel to the brim. What started as a single pot of oil becomes enough to pay your debts and secure your future.

This story is a powerful reminder that God's resources are limitless. Just as the oil overflowed in the hands of the widow, so too can God's blessings overflow in our lives. But often, like the widow, we fail to see the abundance that surrounds us. We focus on our limitations and our lack, blind to the potential that lies dormant within us.

Charles Spurgeon once said, "Our need is not for more blessings, but for deeper capacities to receive them." We must first prepare our hearts, like empty vessels, to be filled with God's grace. We must trust in His power and believe that He can provide for all our needs, even when we feel like we have nothing left.

Like the widow, we will face trials and challenges in life. These are not punishments, but rather opportunities for God to reveal His faithfulness and provide us with a larger measure of His Spirit. Each new need, each new trial, is a vessel waiting to be filled with His overflowing grace.

Adrian Rogers often said, "God never gives you a need without also giving you the seed to meet that need." We must be open to seeing these seeds of blessing in the midst of our challenges. We must trust that God is working in our lives, even when we cannot see the outcome.

So today, dear friend, let go of your anxieties and embrace the abundance that God has for you. See your trials as opportunities for His grace to overflow in your life. Ask Him to help you recognize the seeds of blessing that are hidden within your challenges. And trust that He has everything you need to overcome any obstacle and fulfill His purpose for your life.

Lord, help us to see You in all our trying situations and to make them vessels to hold more of Your grace. Amen.

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved" (Psalm 55:22).

Cast sheep:  Cast  sheep is a term used in sheep farming to describe a sheep that has rolled over onto its back and is unable to get up on its own. This can be a dangerous situation for the sheep, as they can become distressed and die within a short period of time if not helped. It's caused by a variety of factors, such as poor body condition, slippery footing, or exhaustion. The good news is that cast sheep can be saved if spotted and helped quickly. The process of helping a cast sheep is called "righting," and it involves rolling the sheep back onto its feet. This requires some skill and practice, but it's an important part of sheep farming.   shearing the sheep can actually help prevent it from happening! Shearing reduces the weight and size of the sheep's fleece, which can make it less likely to become cast or stuck on its back. Additionally, shearing can help improve the overall health and well-being of the sheep, as it can reduce the risk of skin diseases, and improve their ability to regulate their body temperature. It's kind of like a makeover for the sheep, not only improving their looks but also their health!

As believers we are called God's Sheep and he our shepherd.  If we don't unburden ourselves we are in danger of being a "cast sheep." So to combat this God gives us another kind of casting.

"Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved" (Psalm 55:22). To expand on this, Spurgeon once said, "The man who is full of care is ripe for any sin, but he who has cast his care on God stands securely, neither shall the evil one be able to touch him!" He's saying that when we hand over our worries and fears to God, we can stand firm and find security, no matter what the world throws at us. It's a powerful reminder to put our trust in God and leave our burdens at His feet.

Fickle Feelings

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23)

Our feelings can be fickle things. One moment we feel energetic and happy, the next irritable and tired. But as Christians, we know we cannot allow our feelings to rule our actions. God calls us to live by faith and the Spirit, not by our fleeting emotions.

When we feel exhausted, we can still choose to exercise discipline and take care of our body. When a family member rubs us the wrong way, we can still respond in love and patience. When work seems too hard, we can pray for strength and perseverance to finish the task.

The fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience - is not based on emotions but rather developed through daily dependence on God. As we walk by faith, abiding in Christ, we receive supernatural power to overcome negative feelings and live out godly actions. Our feelings may suggest one thing, but we can choose to do what is right regardless.

The next time you feel too tired, irritated, or overwhelmed, remember - you have the power to act with the fruit of the Spirit despite your feelings. Let your actions be ruled by faith in God, not the emotions of the moment. The victory is found in persevering through hardship, not in giving in to troublesome feelings. By God's strength, keep pressing on!

The Deep End

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 KJV - 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong

One pastor said:

"I remember the first time my dad tossed me into the deep end of a swimming pool when I was just a kid. One moment I was standing comfortably in the shallow end with the water up to my waist, and the next I was flailing wildly in water over my head. As I panicked and struggled to keep my head above water, my dad stood nearby and calmly said, "Just kick your feet and move your arms. You'll stay afloat." And to my surprise, he was right. As I focused on the techniques rather than the overwhelming depth of water around me, I found that I could in fact keep myself from sinking."

In life, God sometimes tosses us into the proverbial deep end - situations that feel way over our heads. A difficult illness, the loss of a job, family struggles, challenges in ministry work - there are many ways the Lord can put us in a place where we feel like we're drowning. Our natural reaction is often to flail and panic. But God stands nearby, reminding us, "Stay focused on Me and the gifts I've given you. Trust in My strength and sufficiency for you, not your own. And you'll stay afloat."

When we feel overwhelmed by the depth of our troubles, we can remember the deep end. God allows those times not to terrify us, but to teach us reliance on Him. He knows that His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Our flailing ceases as we fix our eyes on the Lord and discover the truth - in the deep places, His grace truly is sufficient, His fellowship truly is sweet, and His faithfulness never fails.

Verse: "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." - Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)

 Plate envy, or the feeling of longing for what others have, can often lead us away from contentment and simplicity. In a world that constantly bombards us with images of abundance and excess, it's easy to fall into the trap of desiring more and better things. However, the Bible teaches us the value of contentment and the simplicity of life.

In the midst of our desires for what others have, we are reminded to be content with what we have. The verse from Hebrews 13:5 encourages us to let go of covetousness and find contentment in the blessings we already possess. True happiness and fulfillment come from within, not from material possessions or extravagant meals.

As we navigate the temptation of plate envy, let us focus on the simplicity and contentment that comes from love, gratitude, and the basic necessities of life. Instead of longing for what others have, let us appreciate the love that surrounds us, the shelter that protects us, and the simple joys that bring genuine happiness.

May we find peace in embracing simplicity, contentment, and the enduring love that never leaves nor forsakes us.

"The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords." Psalm 55:21

Many sins start small and seem harmless on the surface, yet they open the door to far greater evils. Flattery and deceit can be like that. Saying pleasant things to achieve selfish ends may not appear too damaging at first. But these types of “little white lies” pave the way to outright manipulation and abuse. As Adrian Rogers said, “Little Sins add up to Big Sins that lead to Larger Sins and finally to Calamities.”

That was the case with the man described in Psalm 55. His words sounded nice but they masked harmful intent, like swords hidden in velvet. What started as “smoother than butter” speech led to discord and strife. Small lies gave way to major deception.

We must guard against allowing tiny infractions that don’t initially seem too problematic. They may open a gateway to much worse. As the old adage goes, “Take care of the little sins, and the big ones will take care of themselves.” Nip sinful thoughts and behaviours in the bud before they blossom into grievous iniquity. Don’t be deceived - sweet talk can conceal a wicked heart.

Don't Attend 

Proverbs 26:4, "Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him." This verse advises us not to engage in foolish arguments or respond to a fool in a manner that mirrors their foolishness.

In our lives, we often encounter situations where we are tempted to respond to foolishness with our own words or actions. However, the book of Proverbs offers us a timeless piece of wisdom in chapter 26, verse 4 - "Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him." This verse encourages us to exercise discernment and restraint when faced with foolishness, reminding us that responding in kind only draws us into the same folly.

As followers of Christ, we are called to embody wisdom and grace in our interactions with others, even when faced with ignorance or foolishness. Refraining from responding to a fool according to their folly does not mean we remain silent in the face of injustice or untruth, but rather that we choose our words and actions carefully, guided by the wisdom of God.

C.H. Spurgeon, the renowned preacher, once reflected on this verse, saying, "It is not needful that we should always answer a fool according to his folly, for he will despise our words; but it is well that we should never answer him in his own way, for that would be to become like him."

Let us take Spurgeon's words to heart and remember that our responses to folly should be rooted in wisdom and grace, reflecting the character of our Lord. Instead of being drawn into fruitless arguments or responding with harsh words, let us seek God's guidance in how we engage with those who exhibit foolishness, always striving to emulate the wisdom and love of Christ in our interactions.

May we find strength in God's wisdom to respond with grace and discernment, embodying the truth of Proverbs 26:4 in our daily lives.

Broken Crayons

"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." (2 Corinthians 4:7 KJV)

Have you ever reached for a crayon to color only to find it broken in half or worn down to a nub? In our disappointment, we tend to cast those crayons aside, assuming they're useless now. However, with just a little more effort, those same broken crayons can still create beautiful artwork.

Like crayons, we sometimes feel useless when life has left us feeling broken. We tell ourselves the lie that God can no longer use cracked vessels like us. But the truth is, our broken places, rather than disqualifying us, make room for God's light to shine through more beautifully. The apostle Paul spoke of this paradox, reminding followers of Christ that the treasure of the gospel dwells within imperfect earthen vessels. In other words, broken crayons still color the same.

God is the ultimate recycler and redeemer, able to gather up the fragments of our broken dreams and relationships in order to repurpose them into something new. He knows how to take our mess and turn it into a message, using the cracks in our lives to reveal His light within. Our imperfections are not obstacles for an all-powerful God. Rather, they provide an opportunity for His grace, mercy and healing to be shown as sufficient to restore our soul.

So when you feel like a worn out, broken crayon today, remember that you were designed to color. Allow God to take your life in all its fractures and flaws, and turn it into a work of art that displays His redemption for the world to see. Even broken crayons still color the same in the hand of the Master Artist.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

I came across this powerful story 

“I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job: a flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric drill quit and his ancient one-ton truck refused to start.

While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward, he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. ‘Oh, that's my trouble tree,' he replied 'I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, those troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning, I pick them up again.' 'Funny thing is,' he smiled,' when I come out in the morning to pick 'em up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before. THIS ONE IS WORTH SENDING ON. Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance. We all need a Tree!"

The verse from 1 Peter captures the essence of "hanging your troubles on the tree" and asking God to handle them. Just as the plumber cast his work troubles on the tree at home, we can cast all our cares upon the Lord, trusting that He cares for us. The story is a good reminder that even when life gets difficult, we can choose joy and peace through faith in God.

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend Pro 27:17 

Growing Pains 

God loves us deeply, just as we are. Yet His love also compels Him to mold us into the people He knows we can become by His grace. As Charles Spurgeon said, “God has designed us to grow.” Everything in God’s creation grows and develops, including us.

While God cares about our struggles, He cares even more about the character and maturity that can emerge from difficult seasons. He wants to use all of life’s circumstances, pleasant or painful, to stimulate our growth into the stature of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). God is firmly on the side of who you can become in Him.

We might prefer comfort over the growing pains that come with change and maturing. But spiritual growth is not optional for the follower of Jesus. Through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, God develops emotional stability, mental acuity, physical discipline, and spiritual vibrancy in us. He uses relationships, trials, teaching, and time in His Word to transform us incrementally into the image of Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18).

In the King James Version of the Bible, Proverbs 27:17 reads, "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend". 

Some say that the meaning of "iron sharpens iron" is that believers have an impact on each other when they interact. In other words we are on the side of who the other person can become, we are rooting for them to grow and change and we grow right alongside them.  Some ways of sharpening one another include: 

Calling out sin

Encouraging each other

Lifting one another up in prayer

Allowing others to see weaknesses or problem areas.

Let's appreciate the people God sends our way who care enough to confront us and help us grow.  Don't be bitter when the try to make you better.

 God Blesses the Broken Road #RTTBROS #Nightlight 

Scripture: Romans 8:28 (KJV) - "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

Devotional Message:

The concept of "God blessed the broken road that lead me straight to you" is beautifully illustrated in the life of David, the shepherd boy who became the King of Israel. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, David's journey ultimately led him to fulfilling God's purpose for his life.

David's early life was marked by a series of unexpected twists and turns. He was the youngest of Jesse's sons, overlooked and underestimated by his own family. However, God had chosen David to be the future king of Israel. Through a divine appointment, David was anointed by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 16:12-13). This was the first step on the broken road that would lead him to his destiny.

After being anointed, David faced many trials and tribulations. He was sent back to the fields to tend sheep, while his brothers went off to war. It was during this time that he developed a deep intimacy with God, writing beautiful psalms and strengthening his faith. David's broken road was a path of preparation, where he learned to trust God and rely on His guidance.

One of the most significant moments in David's life was his encounter with Goliath, the giant Philistine warrior. While the entire Israeli army trembled in fear, David, fueled by his unwavering faith in God, stepped forward to face Goliath. With just a sling and a stone, David defeated the giant, showcasing God's power and faithfulness (1 Samuel 17:45-50). This victory propelled David into the public eye and set him on a path towards kingship.

Despite his anointing and victory over Goliath, David's journey was far from smooth. He faced persecution, betrayal, and even had to flee for his life from King Saul, who sought to kill him. During this time, David wrote many heartfelt psalms, pouring out his emotions and seeking God's guidance and protection. It was through these trials that David's character was refined, and his dependence on God grew stronger.

In due time, David's broken road led him to the throne of Israel. He became one of Israel's greatest kings and a man after God's own heart. Through his experiences, David learned to fully rely on God, acknowledging that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

Just like David, our lives may be marked by unexpected twists and turns. We may encounter brokenness, disappointments, and setbacks along our journey. However, we can take comfort in the assurance that God is with us every step of the way. He can turn our broken roads into paths that lead us straight to Him and His purpose for our lives.

Let us trust in God's sovereignty and His ability to work all things together for our good. May we seek His guidance, lean on His strength, and believe that He will bless our broken roads, leading us to a place of fulfillment and purpose. Remember, God's plans for us are greater than we can imagine, and He is faithful to bring us to our desired destination.

The following explains how we can gain emotional stability in time of trials and suffering:

"While piloting a plane in a thick fog, a pilot cannot be sure of his direction unless he gives full attention to his instruments. When flying through a thunderstorm, the turbulence will throw him about, and the darkness within the clouds will threaten to disorient him. Sometimes he will feel as though he is going up or down or turning around. But he cannot depend on his feelings. Only the gyros can be trusted, so the pilot must hang on to the controls in the turbulence and discipline his mind to concentrate on the instruments while he flies through the storm.

The parallel truth for the Christian in troubled times is clear. Undisciplined feelings…can cause a crash unless one keeps himself stabilized by the facts of the Word of God…Every promise in the Word of God is like a gyro giving information to stabilize him in a specific situation…With daily practice one learns not to panic but to believe a specific truth from the Bible fitted for his own unique circumstances. By experience one learns not to fight his feelings, but to look away from them to the “instrument panel” of the Word of God which is utterly dependable.

One discovers that if he will just hang on in the worst of the turbulence, no matter how disrupting, his mind and heart steadied by the great truths of the Word and his eyes intently fixed on God Himself, he will eventually break through rain-black clouds to soar once more in the clear, tranquil atmosphere."

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.” (Psalm 37:23-24)

In our walk with God, it's easy to get discouraged when we stumble. We take two steps forward in our faith, only to suddenly take one step back into old habits or sin. We pray, read scripture, serve in church, then suddenly fall back into anxiety, anger, or apathy.

It's easy to get down on ourselves and wonder if we'll ever make steady progress. But this passage gives us hope. Even when the "good man" falls, he will not be utterly cast down, because the Lord upholds him. God views us not based on a moment of failure, but the overall trajectory of our walk with Him. The word "ordered" also reminds us that it's God charting our path, not our own shaky strength.

What do we do when we stumble? First, repent, ask forgiveness, and gratefully receive God's mercy. But dwelling on guilt slows our pace. The best response is to humbly get back on the path, knowing God uses our falls to teach dependence on Him alone. By His strength, one step back only serves to propel us two steps forward as we learn and grow.

The next time you take one step back after two steps forward, remember God upholds you. Place your hope in His power, not your own. Keep your eyes on the loving Creator charting your steps. No matter the stumbles on the journey, He who began a good work in you is faithful to carry it to completion.  Our falls do not change God's delights or derail His plans when we rely wholly on His hand.

Robbed A Thanksgiving Devotion  #RTTBROS  #nightlight

 "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." (1 Thessalonians 5:18 KJV)

The great Bible commentator Matthew Henry lived out this verse after a thief stole his wallet. Rather than rage or despair, Henry responded with grace and gratitude. First, he thanked God that he had never been robbed before. Though now deprived, Henry reflected on years of provision and safety. Second, though robbed of his purse, the thief did not take Henry’s life or possessions; many suffer far worse violations. Third, Henry lost little of value, acknowledging that earthly wealth can disappear quickly. As Job endured much worse calamity yet still praised God saying, “Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21 KJV). Finally, Henry thanked God that he was a victim of robbery, not a perpetrator of it.

Charles Spurgeon once preached, “A grateful heart will see good even in the darkest days.” Despite his loss, with grace and wisdom Henry saw blessings to be thankful for. May we emulate his godly perspective, as Spurgeon exhorted: “Come, my heart, begin your hallelujahs...Boast thyself in God...Bless the Lord throughout this day; bless Him while you live.” God uses all circumstances for our growth if we respond rightly.

Devoted To Prayer #RTTBROS #normankissinger #nightlight #NK 

If you are involved in ministry in any significant way you will be attacked by the enemy to discourage or distract you.  This will happen in a prayer ministry as well.  In Acts 6:4 we are allowed to glimpse the importance of prayer in the early Church.  Deacons were appointed to do the physical ministry so the apostles could give themselves to the ministry of Prayer and the ministry of the Word.

    So deepening out prayer life and digging into the Word to minister into the lives of others is paramount. We are better at getting the gospel out but we have lost the art of effective prayer.

   For me it is easier to preach then to pray.  The disciples never asked Jesus to teach them to preach they did ask instruction from him on prayer.

     What can you change in your schedule to make prayer a priority?

     How can you spend more time in God's Word.

Found and Loved

"What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?" (Luke 15:4 KJV)

As the weary parent wraps their arms around the lost child, tears of relief and joy stream down their face. Yet there is also a somber recognition that this reunion could have ended differently. We too, like lost sheep, have been relentlessly pursued by our Good Shepherd, who "so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16 KJV).

As Charles Spurgeon said, "What a blessing that Jesus did not say, ‘I will seek until I find some of my sheep!’" No, he goes after each lost sheep until he finds it, however difficult the search. We have been loved with an intimate and tenacious love beyond measure. Let us then live in wonder and gratitude for the Seeking Shepherd who brings home His lost sheep. As Adrian Rogers said "God demonstrated His love when Christ died for us while we were still sinners." It could have ended differently, but by God's grace we have been found and loved.

Coal Basket Ps119: 11 #nightlight #RTTBROS 

Psalm 119:11 says "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." This verse reminds us that memorizing and meditating on God's Word keeps us from sin.

Little Johnny was visiting his grandfather on summer vacation. One day grandpa was reading his Bible like he did every morning. "Haven't you read that book front to back yet?" Johnny asked. Grandpa chuckled, "Come here, I want to show you something."

He took a coal basket and had Johnny fill it with water from the creek. Of course, all the water drained out through the loose weave. "Now do it again but faster," said grandpa. Johnny ran and filled the basket, but the water leaked out just the same. After a third try, grandpa asked "What happened to the basket?" Johnny replied, "Well the water didn't stay in, but the basket sure got clean!"

Grandpa smiled and said "It's like that with reading the Bible. We may have trouble retaining it all, but meditating on God's word has a way of cleaning out the clutter in our lives." As Gypsy Smith said, "It isn't how many times you've been through the Bible, but how many times the Bible has been through you."

The more we read Scripture, the more it washes over us like water through a basket, rinsing away the sin and dust of the world. The psalmist said he hid God's word in his heart to keep from sinning. As Adrian Rogers explained, "The Bible is a cleansing agent and will clean up your life." May we eagerly soak up its life-changing power every day!

The Bible renews our minds and transforms us as we soak in its inspiration. Drinking deeply of Scripture keeps the spiritual basket of our soul cleansed. Then we can carry the refreshing water of God's wisdom to quench the thirsty hearts around us.

Battle Prayer

"But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia." - Daniel 10:13 KJV

In our spiritual battles, we often face opposition from forces we cannot see. The prince of Persia withstood the angel bringing revelation to Daniel for 21 days. Though we grow weary in the fight, we must remember we are not alone. God sends His angels to aid us, just as Michael was sent to help the messenger to Daniel.

As Adrian Rogers said, "We are in a battle, and we cannot afford to lose this battle. It's a battle for truth, a battle for life, a battle for love, a battle for the family." We must keep praying and fighting, even when the battle seems endless. Surgeon says, "Ten minutes in prayer will save ten hours in effort." Let us spend time daily in prayer, petitioning God for strength and wisdom for the fight.

Though the world rages against God's truths, we can stand firm. The battle belongs to the Lord, and He has overcome the world. Our prayers activate heaven to fight on our behalf. Keep praying without ceasing. The victory is assured in Christ.
