Trouble 2 Cor. 7:5 by A.B Simpson

Why should God have to lead us through troubles and allow the pressure to be so hard and constant? In the first place, it shows His all-sufficient strength and grace much better than if we were exempt from pressure and trial. We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us (2 Corinthians 4:7). Also, it makes us more conscious of our dependence upon God. God is constantly trying to teach us our dependence and to hold us absolutely in His hand and hanging upon His care. This was the place where Jesus Himself stood and where He wants us to stand, not with a self constituted strength, but with a hand ever leaning upon His, and a trust that dares not take one step alone. Troubles teach us trust. There is no way of learning faith except by trial. It is God's school of faith, and it is far better for us to learn to trust God than to escape trials. The lesson of faith, once learned, is an everlasting acquisition and an eternal fortune made. Without trust even riches will leave us poor. We were troubled on every side -2 Corinthians 7:5

Fret Not Ps. 37:7 by F.B Meyer

FRET NOT

"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him: Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass."-- Psa 37:7.

IT IS a mistake to be always turning back to recover the past. The law for christian living is not backward, but forward; not for experiences that lie behind, but for doing the will of God, which is always ahead and beckoning us to follow. Leave the things that are behind, and reach forward to those that are before, for on each new height to which we attain, there are the appropriate joys that befit the new experience. Don't fret because life's joys are fled. There are more in front. Look up, press forward, the best is yet to be!

Fret not because your ideals appear to mock you. Every ideal which we cherish is the herald and precursor of a reality which, in a better form than ever we dreamed, shall one day come to our possession. The ancient alchemists spent their lives in the pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone, which they thought would turn every substance it touched to gold. They never discovered it, but they laid the foundations of modern chemistry, which has been more fruitful in its blessing to our race than the famous magic-stone would have been. Who shall say that those old explorers were deceived? Was not God leading them on, by a way that they knew not, to better things than they dreamed?

Fret not because the future seems dark. After all, the troubles we anticipate may never really befall. It is a long lane without a turning, and the dreariest day has some glint of light. In any case, worrying will not help matters; it can alter neither the future nor the past, though it will materially affect our power in dealing with troubles. It will not rob to-morrow of its difficulties, but it will rob your brain of its clear-sightedness, and your heart of its courage. Let us turn to God with faith and prayer, looking out for the one or two patches of blue which are in every sky. And if you cannot discover any where you are, dare to anticipate the time when God shall make all things work together for good to them that love Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we have been careful and troubled about many things. Forgive us, and breathe into our hearts a great faith in Thee, that doubts and fears may not be able to break in on our peace. Fence us around to-day as with a wall of fire; let us hear Thy voice saying: Fear not, I am with thee. AMEN.

We must recognize the true character of our self-life and its real virulence and vileness. We must consent to its destruction, and we must take it ourselves, as Abraham did Isaac, and lay it at the feet of God in willing sacrifice. This is a seemingly impossible task for the natural heart, but the moment the will is yielded and the choice is made, we are astonished to find that the agony is over and death is accomplished. Usually the crisis in such cases hangs upon a single point. God does not need to strike us in a hundred places to inflict a death wound. There is one point that touches the heart and that is the Point God usually strikes. It will likely be the dearest thing in our lives, the decisive thing in our plans, the citadel of our wills, the center of our hearts. And when we yield there, there is little left to yield anywhere else. But when we refuse to yield at that point, a spirit of evasion and compromise enters into all the rest of our lives. Let us take Him to enable us to will His will in all things in our lives. Now mine eyes seeth thee -Job 42:5

The Worthy Walk Eph 4:1-3 by Dr Paul Chappell

The Worthy Walk
by Dr. Paul Chappell

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:1-3

God takes us into His family and gives us His name when we are saved. But in return, He expects us to live up to that name. We have a purpose here on Earth. We are not just passing time until we get to Heaven. We have a calling and a purpose and a destiny, and we are called to live up to it, day after day. Horatius Bonar wrote, “If you are Christians, be consistent. Be Christians out and out; Christians every hour, in every part. Beware of halfhearted discipleship, of compromise with evil, of conformity to the world, of trying to serve two masters—to walk in two ways, the narrow and the broad, at once. It will not do. Halfhearted Christianity will only dishonor God, while it makes you miserable.”

The calling of God is not just for people in full-time ministry. It is for every believer. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). God has a work for you to do, and He is calling you to live in such a way that the work will not be hindered. God certainly does not need our help to accomplish His purposes, but He has given us the opportunity to glorify Him through our service. But we only bring Him that glory if our daily lives are characterized by having a right relationship with Him and with others.

We must not allow pride to come between us and God. We must not allow hurt feelings or impatience to come between us and other Christians. Only when both of these relationships are right can we do all that God has set before us to accomplish.

Today's Growth Principle:
Working for God in any role is a high honor, and we should strive to be worthy to do His work.

Shoot the Dog By Norman Kissinger

These 20 years ago a no-nonsense Missouri-minded farmer friend of mine was asked by is next door neighbor to kill his sick dog. The neighbor did not have the heart to do it and his family was to attached to the animal. A verbal agreement was made and my farmer friend went home. When he got to his house, approximately a quarter mile away, he pulled out old trustee, his deer rifle, put her over the fence post and from over 300 yards made a clean shot of the dog in the neighbor's yard. Not bad for a Missouri deer hunter. We have pretty good shots here in the Show Me State. Old reliable was lovingly put back in her place of rest and the deed of mercy was done.

About 15 minutes later the neighbor came driving up my friend’s driveway in a fury. Now I was not in on the conversation, but I believe that the neighbor’s contention was that it was implied that my friend would take Fido off as the family waved goodbye and later the kids would be consoled with the idea that Fido was in heaven with Grandma angel and Uncle Ned angel. Everybody teary but happy that Fido was happy, Grandma was happy, Uncle Ned was happy and so they could be happy too. It did not include Fido laying by his dog house in a pool of blood, having had his life terminated forth with. My farmer friend contended that that was not part of the verbal agreement and the neighbor contended that it was implied in any such agreement.

Now I know my friend will be judged in the court of public opinion so I will take up his case as a court of public opinion self-appointed lawyer. (If you want to see my credentials please give me a few days to get them printed.) Although it is reasonable for the neighbor to assume that taking Fido for a private Grandma Angel experience, it was never stated in the verbal contract. I believe that my client has the legal grounds for acquittal based on the verbal contract not being clear.

It is hoped that the neighbors laugh about it looking back. Maybe the relationship began to improve by a friendly wave as the neighbor took the family off to trauma-inform therapy. Maybe there was, after a long discussion, an invite to a barbecue. Time tends to heal all wounds-except for the dogs.

Thinking back on my friends experience, I would like to offer two lessons. The first is from a counselor perspective: communication, communication, communication, people. If my friends would have communicated clearly then this sad tale would have never happened. You need us counselors way more than you know. It is all fun and games until the dog gets shot.

The second lesson is that God is often like my friend. We ask Him to do something and sometimes He just shoots the dog. God tends to take the quickest and most efficient route to get done what needs to be done. When we finally get ourselves to a place where we are praying for the things we should be praying for He immediately goes to work with my no-nonsense Missouri minded friends gusto. As an example of this every Christian at one time or another has prayed for patience. God then blesses us with all kinds of trials so that we can learn patience. That's not what we really mean. What we really mean is we want Him to come down and invade is with some sort of a spiritual power that makes us immediately Mother Teresa. We want it done our way without pain or effort or any real change.

But God has a more efficient way-he shoots the dog. He goes directly to what needs to happen to fix the problem in the most efficient way and the most effective way that it can be done. We misunderstand God because He's about the end result and we're about it happening in a way that is to the least inconvenience or emotional stress to us. God is not worried about our inconvenience or emotional stress. He is worried about conforming us to the image of Christ and the direct route is the quickest way to get there.

We ask God to do something and when it is painful hard or discouraging we say yes Lord I wanted it but not that way. Interestingly enough we serve a God that is bigger than our understanding and not only knows what we need but knows how we need it.

In my sad tale my friend probably should have given his neighbor the Grandma and Uncle Ned angel experience. But I guarantee you that when it comes to our spiritual growth and answered prayers, God is just going to shoot the dog.

Team Work by Dr. Paul Chappell

The Importance of Teamwork

by Dr. Paul Chappell

But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel. Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.

Philippians 2:19-23

The first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, did not talk about that experience very much. He explained that as a pilot, he perferred talking about flying to talking about landing. But at an event celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the moon landing, Armstrong said, “I was aware that this was a culmination of the work of 300,000 or 400,000 people over a decade.” When Neil Armstrong died, his fellow astronaut Jim Lovell said, “His favorite part was being part of a team.”

Though each of us must do our part in the work of the Lord, it is not an individual project, but rather a team effort. And each member of the team must do his or her part. Imagine what would have happened to Armstrong and his fellow astronauts if people in engineering, construction, or flight planning had decided that because their faces would not be on television, their jobs were unimportant and they did not need to do them diligently and well. Disaster would have surely followed.

The Lord's work deserves the very best we can give it. Whether anyone knows who we are does not matter. There are no crowns for fame, but rather for faithfulness. Every task God places before us matters. As the saying goes, “Even if the task is not worthy of you, diligence is.” Rather than seeking glory and self-promotion, we should rejoice to be part of the team God has called to do His work.

Today's Growth Principle:
There are no little jobs in God's work, and everything we do for Him deserves our very best.

Why have you not received all the fullness of the Holy Spirit? Do you not long to be anointed with the rest of the oil? (Leviticus 14:17-18). Look around you at your situation. Are you not conscious of many needs at this very moment and almost overwhelmed with difficulties, trials and emergencies? These are all divinely provided vessels for the Holy Spirit's filling. If you would only understand their meaning, they will become opportunities for receiving new blessings and deliverances which you can obtain in no other way. Bring these vessels to God. Hold them steadily before Him in faith and prayer. Keep still. Cease your own restless working until He begins to work. Do nothing that He does not Himself command you to do. Give Him a chance to work, and He will surely do so. Then the very trials that threatened to overcome you with discouragement and disaster will become God's opportunity for the revelation of His grace and glory in your life, as you have never known Him before. Bring them [all needs] to me. Bring them hither to me -Matthew 14:18
